Nappy rash is a very common skin condition, which most babies experience at some point. As your baby's skin is much thinner than an adult's and has a higher pH level, it is more sensitive and therefore vulnerable to skin conditions such as nappy rash.

Causes of nappy rash

The most common cause of nappy rash is when your baby's skin comes into contact with the ammonia found in urine and faeces, leading to skin irritation, redness and soreness.

Other causes of nappy rash include:

  • Baby wipes containing alcohol or perfume can cause irritation
  • Too much medicated or perfumed soap can irritate the skin
  • Eczema can cause your baby's skin to become dry and sore

Nappy rash is more likely to occur:

  • During teething. Babies may experience nappy rash for the first time at the onset of teething
  • If your baby is ill, especially if they have an upset stomach or a cold
  • If your baby has been prescribed antibiotics which can upset their digestive system resulting in diarrhoea
  • If you change from breast feeding to bottle feeding
  • When you start to introduce solid foods into your baby's diet

Symptoms of nappy rash

Most babies will only experience mild nappy rash, where a pink rash, usually made up of small spots or blotches develops over the nappy area. Your baby should feel well in general, but may experience a stinging sensation when passing urine or faeces.
