Top tips for preventing nappy rash

By following good skincare routines you can help prevent your baby from developing nappy rash.

  • Leave the nappy off as much as possible which helps the skin stay dry and allows fresh air to get into the skin
  • Change the nappy regularly to avoid contact with faeces or urine
  • Apply a suitable barrier cream or ointment such as zinc oxide after each nappy change, to help reduce the contact your baby's skin has with urine and faeces

  • Avoid using soaps when cleaning the nappy area as they can irritate the skin. Water alone is best or if you are out and about, a wet wipe without alcohol is a good alternative
  • Use soft material such as cotton wool when wiping the skin and dry your baby's bottom by patting (not rubbing) it with a towel
  • Don't use powders such as talcum powder when changing your baby's nappy because unlike a barrier cream, it doesn't offer any protection from urine and faeces and it can also cause friction and irritate your baby's skin
